This page states what the tool computes, from what data, and under what assumptions — including what it misses. It is meant to be read before trusting the figure.
1 Ce qui est mesuré
1 What is measured
One question only: since a month you choose, has your pay kept up with consumer prices in France? Three series, all rebased to 100 at that month.
|---|---|---|
pri | Indice de prix | 100 × IPCt / IPC0 |
pow | Pouvoir d’achat | 100 × sal / pri |
sal | Salary index | built from the pay rises you enter |
|---|---|---|
Above 100, pay has outrun inflation since the start month; below, it has not. No estimation, no smoothing, no adjustment: that is the whole model. Rebasing to 100 makes it a comparison of growth, not of level — two people with the same sequence of percentages draw the same curve, whether they earn €1,500 or €15,000.
A percentage compounds, an amount replaces. Two rises of 2% then 3% make 5.06%, not 5%. Each row keeps the unit you typed, which is what lets a euro amount stay fixed when an earlier rise changes.
2 L’indice des prix
2 The price index
IPC Insee — ensemble des ménages, France, hors tabac.
Séries 001763852 (base 2015) et 011814056 (base 2025).
Trois choix tiennent dans cette ligne.
Insee CPI — all households, France, excluding tobacco.
Series 001763852 (2015 base) and 011814056 (2025 base).
Three choices are packed into that line.
| Choix | Pourquoi | Ce qu’il coûte |
|---|---|---|
| Choice | Why | What it costs |
|---|---|---|
| National CPI, not the European HICP | The CPI is the index used in France for legal and contractual indexation, and the question asked is “in France”. | A small discrepancy against euro-area statistics. |
| Excluding tobacco | Tobacco prices follow excise policy, not the market. Including them would let a tax decision move a figure meant to measure something else. | For a smoker the index understates inflation, and over a decade the gap is not trivial. |
| All households | The tool has no idea who you are, so it has no basis for picking a sub-population. | This is limitation number one — see §7. |
Chaining. Insee moved from the 2015 base to the 2025 base in December 2025. The two series are spliced on the mean ratio over their shared months rather than on a single link month, so one anomalous month cannot shift the whole join. Where the two do not overlap — which is the case for the bundled data used offline — the splice falls back to the mean of the last complete year. The adjustment is a level adjustment only — it does not reconcile the composition of the two baskets, which Insee revised at the same time.
3 « Pouvoir d’achat », ici
3 “Purchasing power”, here
The figure shown is a real wage: nominal pay deflated by consumer prices. It is not the “purchasing power” Insee publishes, which is a macroeconomic aggregate.
| This page | Insee, purchasing power of GDI | |
|---|---|---|
| Object | One individual salary | Gross disposable income of all households |
| Income | Gross, wages only | Benefits and property income included, net of taxes and social contributions |
| Deflator | CPI excluding tobacco | Consumption deflator |
The two figures will not agree. They answer different questions: that is an error in neither. Nor is this “your” inflation (§7.1), nor a judgement about your pay: the curve says whether pay tracked prices, not whether it should have.

11,5 % d’augmentations contre 18,4 % d’inflation : environ 5,9 % de pouvoir d’achat perdu en huit ans. Ce n’est pas 18,4 − 11,5 = 6,9 points : des rapports ne se soustraient pas.
11.5% of rises against 18.4% of inflation: about 5.9% of purchasing power lost over eight years. It is not 18.4 − 11.5 = 6.9 points: ratios do not subtract.

5 L’option accession à la propriété
5 The home-ownership option
The CPI tracks rents and ignores the purchase price of a dwelling: it is a tenant’s inflation. For someone trying to buy, it misses the item that dominates the decision. The option takes rents out of the index and puts the cost of entering ownership in their place.
Pt = 100 × ( 0,70 × et/e0 + 0,30 × at/a0 ) e = IPC hors tabac et hors loyers a = prix du logement × facteur d’annuité(taux, 25 ans)
Pt = 100 × ( 0.70 × et/e0 + 0.30 × at/a0 ) e = CPI excluding tobacco and rents a = house price × annuity factor(rate, 25 years)
i / (1 − (1+i)−n) avec i le taux mensuel et
The annuity factor is the standard fixed-rate amortisation,
i / (1 − (1+i)−n) with i the monthly rate and
n the number of payments: the share of the borrowed principal repaid
each month. The down payment does not enter — it cancels in the ratio
at/a0, provided it stayed constant over the
period, which is an assumption and not an identity.

The ECB rate is a new business rate: it is what a buyer at month
t would be offered, and since the French market is overwhelmingly
fixed-rate, that rate genuinely locks the payment at purchase. Prices being
quarterly, they are anchored to the middle month of the quarter and interpolated,
and the last published quarter is carried forward flat.
substitution reste visible.
Read it as an entry cost. at is the monthly
payment of a buyer purchasing at month t’s price and rate. It is
not what someone who already bought pays: on a fixed-rate loan they pay a
nominally constant sum, which falls in real terms. The official CPI stays on the
chart as a dashed line so the divergence introduced by the substitution stays
visible.

The buyer’s index reads 128.0 against 118.4 for the official CPI: about 9.6 points of divergence over eight years. Within the +48.4% rise in acquisition cost, price contributes ×1.2550 and the rate ×1.1826 — roughly three fifths price and two fifths interest rate.

7 Ce que ça ne capte pas
7 What this does not capture
Par ordre d’importance décroissante.
In decreasing order of importance.
- The average basket is nobody’s basket. Inflation is not experienced uniformly: budget shares differ sharply by income, age, tenure status and region, and relative prices move. When energy and food run ahead of the average — 2022-2023 — lower-income households face materially higher effective inflation than the headline. The same curve therefore understates one person’s loss and overstates another’s.
- Gross wages, and nothing else. Whatever you type is deflated as-is. No income tax, no social contributions, no benefits, no household composition, no other income source. A change in the gross-to-net relationship is invisible here, even though it can move disposable income more than a pay rise does.
- A promotion counts as a pay rise. Promotion, job change, a move to full-time: all of them compound exactly like an indexation. Career progression then reads as a purchasing-power gain. Nothing in the input can separate the two.
- Capital appreciation is ignored. The largest omission in the home-ownership option. Buying an asset whose price is rising is not simply “more expensive”: part of the payment builds equity, and expected appreciation offsets the cost. Only the financing term is computed here, so over a period of rising prices the option overstates the cost of ownership.
- The buyer’s index is not transitive. Because both relatives are taken against your start month with fixed weights, the movement read between 2020 and 2024 depends on which start month was chosen. The official CPI line does not have this flaw: it is a plain rebasing of a single series.
- Pay rises are self-reported. The salary series is not observed data: it is what you remember, and nothing is validated. The price side is measured; the pay side is recalled.
And also. The loan term held at 25 years: real maturities lengthened over the period, and that is precisely how buyers absorbed rising prices — fixing it therefore overstates the deterioration relative to what they actually experienced. The usual biases of any CPI (substitution, quality, new goods), no seasonal adjustment — a short window can be dominated by seasonal movement, and the house price index is seasonally adjusted where the CPI is not —, national averages that describe no particular local market, the flat carry-forward of the last published price quarter, and a bundled dataset that goes stale: offline, the curve simply stops at the last month it holds.
